FAQ

What is the difference between "Stump Grinding" and "Stump Removal?"
These are two different phrases often used to describe the same thing. Most often, a stump is removed by Stump Grinding, which is using a specialized machine to grind away the stump to a specified depth.
How deep do I need to have the stump ground?
This really depends on what you would like to do with the area, but typically for most uses, 6-8" below ground is what we recommend if replanting grass. When we are grinding for a tree replant we use a specialty setup to grind to the required depth for the root ball, additional excavation, and certain care after the new tree is planted. We only recommend doing this if the tree must be planted in the exact same spot because of the additional cost, but are happy to provide this service.
How far around the stump should we grind?
Typically, we grind the actual stump and the immediate "root flare" around the stump. We find that this offers the best end result possible. However, sometimes a tree may have surface roots, and we can quote to have those ground as well. Sometimes, with an invasive or sprouting stump, it's preferred to "carpet grind" the whole area, which we sometimes do for folks for an additional charge.
Is there a mess after stump grinding?
There can be! Removing a stump should be considered a fairly major excavation activity, and although our equipment is designed to be low impact, grinding the stump still takes a lot of force, and as such you can expect some chips to be thrown. Often times, if the stump is any larger than 8-12", you can expect a large chip pile next to the hole where your stump once was. If you'd like, upgrade to our chip haulaway service for a modest charge, and that pile of chips will leave with us!
What if I wanted it to look like the stump was never there?
Absolutely! With our "Cadillac" service, we will grind your stump, haul the debris away, haul in black dirt, and level the area out with our equipment, making it as if the stump was never there! Depending on the time of year, if available, we will throw in grass seed for free!
